The Origin
The so-called ‘Muñeca Quitapena’ originates in Guatemala and their story is based on local Mayan legend involving a princess who receives a special gift from the sun God which allows her to solve people’s worries. This evolved into a tradition of little hand-crafted people to whom the children would tell their fears, sorrows and worries to at bedtime who would take these on so that the child could sleep peacefully. In more recent times, they can play a useful psychological role in helping during times of sorrow or anxiety and counsellors have found that these creations act as some kind of imaginary, but trusted “listener”, “allayer” and “contact person”. I have created my own version of the traditional Worry Doll and have called them Worry Companions to remove any implication that they are a toy – these are not a toy. I also believe that the use of the word ‘Companion’ will make them appealing to both genders, encouraging and supporting the movement that males should confidentally speak their feelings and emotions too. I use only soft yarns and fabric materials and each one is uniquely handmade with love and positive affirmations, carrying with it the gift of a small rollerball with a calming essential oil blend of lavender and frankincense in a fractionated coconut carrier oil. The essential oils are of high quality and when the blend is rolled gently onto pulse points of wrists, temples and soles of feet, it can ease feelings of anxiety and bring calm. I hope that these unique companions can bring some peaceful sleep and comfort to any ‘worriers’ that may need a helping hand.
